Brain Poop

Brain poop

You know when you accumulate frustrations, a good way to get rid of it is a way I call brain poop. You open up your journal and let it spill. I used to write a lot. But since I started Parisii, I haven't had much time. I miss it and lately I've been feeling constipated, if you know what I mean.

Here are some of my daily frustrations:

-We have a vacant lot full of gypsies on the two extremities of our street. From 6 am til late at night, they carry their garbage finds in baby buggies, strollers and stolen grocery carts. I love the noise they make hauling large amounts of metal in those teensy weensy means of transportation. Most of it drags on the ground. It sounds like 100,000 nails of a huge chalkboard.

-It is so fun to hear them fight amongst themselves, which can also happen at any time of the day or night. Just love that.

-I really enjoy the fact that since I changed my status for my business, I've been paying twice into the social charges here. That is so cool. Oh and that I had three accounts in their computers too is a real treat. Socialistic typ governments are on the top of my list of faves. They are extremely competent and their employees are tops in productivity.

-Another really nifty thing that has been happening is that since I work so much, my dear husband does the laundry most of the time. I do appreciate this. What is even better is when I see my 14 year old son wear his 11 year old brother's sweat pants or my 8 year old wearing her 21 year old sister's t shirts. Gabrielle is small but this is ridiculous.

I'm feeling better so I'll just flush.

Catching up
[info]applehill

Dan is home from the hospital and doing well. I'm so glad. It was a long week. And an even longer time to see hims with a bum leg. He had an infected hygroma. God is so good to have allowed me not to have ANY jewelry appointments during this time.

I'm back on Reliv Classic. I tried the Now but had less good results. I've taken it twice so far today and am started to have a clearer head from this nasty head cold I've had. It seems if I take 3 shakes a day, my joint pain goes away.

We're enjoying beautiful weather. Sun and 16 celcius. I can't complain about that. I have the window open and can barely wee the computer screen because of the sun!

The Coming Evangelical Collapse

The Coming Evangelical Collapse

By Michael Spencer www.internetmonk.com

I wanted to share this as it is not necessarily prophetic, but describing certain trends that we are seeing even today. I do not agree with all of it, as I believe God will continue to use His people in various contexts, but I believe readers can glean some things, get some things confirmed, and at least consider the possibility of some of it. So yes some more things to ponder and ask the Father about, maybe even to pray about. The gates of hell will not prevail against the church Jesus is building, but there is no question the church, and especially the American church is going through a major shift, and anything that is not the way of the Lord may witness a passing away to God's best.. Robert R.

Oneida, Ky. - We are on the verge within 10 years of a major collapse of evangelical Christianity. This breakdown will follow the deterioration of the mainline Protestant world and it will fundamentally alter the religious and cultural environment in the West.

Within two generations, evangelicalism will be a house deserted of half its occupants. (Between 25 and 35 percent of Americans today are Evangelicals.) In the "Protestant" 20th century, Evangelicals flourished. But they will soon be living in a very secular and religiously antagonistic 21st century.

This collapse will herald the arrival of an anti-Christian chapter of the post-Christian West. Intolerance of Christianity will rise to levels many of us have not believed possible in our lifetimes, and public policy will become hostile toward evangelical Christianity, seeing it as the opponent of the common good.

Millions of Evangelicals will quit. Thousands of ministries will end. Christian media will be reduced, if not eliminated. Many Christian schools will go into rapid decline. I'm convinced the grace and mission of God will reach to the ends of the earth. But the end of evangelicalism as we know it is close.

Why is this going to happen?

1. Evangelicals have identified their movement with the culture war and with political conservatism. This will prove to be a very costly mistake. Evangelicals will increasingly be seen as a threat to cultural progress. Public leaders will consider us bad for America, bad for education, bad for children, and bad for society.

The evangelical investment in moral, social, and political issues has depleted our resources and exposed our weaknesses. Being against gay marriage and being rhetorically pro-life will not make up for the fact that massive majorities of Evangelicals can't articulate the Gospel with any coherence. We fell for the trap of believing in a cause more than a faith.

2. We Evangelicals have failed to pass on to our young people an orthodox form of faith that can take root and survive the secular onslaught. Ironically, the billions of dollars we've spent on youth ministers, Christian music, publishing, and media has produced a culture of young Christians who know next to nothing about their own faith except how they feel about it. Our young people have deep beliefs about the culture war, but do not know why they should obey scripture, the essentials of theology, or the experience of spiritual discipline and community. Coming generations of Christians are going to be monumentally ignorant and unprepared for culture-wide pressures.

3. There are three kinds of evangelical churches today: consumer-driven megachurches, dying churches, and new churches whose future is fragile. Denominations will shrink, even vanish, while fewer and fewer evangelical churches will survive and thrive.

4. Despite some very successful developments in the past 25 years, Christian education has not produced a product that can withstand the rising tide of secularism. Evangelicalism has used its educational system primarily to staff its own needs and talk to itself.

5. The confrontation between cultural secularism and the faith at the core of evangelical efforts to "do good" is rapidly approaching. We will soon see that the good Evangelicals want to do will be viewed as bad by so many, and much of that work will not be done. Look for ministries to take on a less and less distinctively Christian face in order to survive.

6. Even in areas where Evangelicals imagine themselves strong (like the Bible Belt), we will find a great inability to pass on to our children a vital evangelical confidence in the Bible and the importance of the faith.

7. The money will dry up.

What will be left?

Expect evangelicalism to look more like the pragmatic, therapeutic, church-growth oriented megachurches that have defined success. Emphasis will shift from doctrine to relevance, motivation, and personal success resulting in churches further compromised and weakened in their ability to pass on the faith.

Two of the beneficiaries will be the Roman Catholic and Orthodox communions. Evangelicals have been entering these churches in recent decades and that trend will continue, with more efforts aimed at the "conversion" of Evangelicals to the Catholic and Orthodox traditions.

A small band will work hard to rescue the movement from its demise through theological renewal. This is an attractive, innovative, and tireless community with outstanding media, publishing, and leadership development. Nonetheless, I believe the coming evangelical collapse will not result in a second reformation, though it may result in benefits for many churches and the beginnings of new churches.

The emerging church will largely vanish from the evangelical landscape, becoming part of the small segment of progressive mainline Protestants that remain true to the liberal vision.

Aggressively evangelistic fundamentalist churches will begin to disappear.

Charismatic-Pentecostal Christianity will become the majority report in evangelicalism. Can this community withstand heresy, relativism, and confusion? To do so, it must make a priority of biblical authority, responsible leadership, and a reemergence of orthodoxy.

Evangelicalism needs a "rescue mission" from the world Christian community. It is time for missionaries to come to America from Asia and Africa. Will they come? Will they be able to bring to our culture a more vital form of Christianity?

Expect a fragmented response to the culture war. Some Evangelicals will work to create their own countercultures, rather than try to change the culture at large. Some will continue to see conservatism and Christianity through one lens and will engage the culture war much as before a status quo the media will be all too happy to perpetuate. A significant number, however, may give up political engagement for a discipleship of deeper impact.

Is all of this a bad thing?

Evangelicalism doesn't need a bailout. Much of it needs a funeral. But what about what remains?

Is it a good thing that denominations are going to become largely irrelevant? Only if the networks that replace them are able to marshal resources, training, and vision to the mission field and into the planting and equipping of churches.

Is it a good thing that many marginal believers will depart? Possibly, if churches begin and continue the work of renewing serious church membership. We must change the conversation from the maintenance of traditional churches to developing new and culturally appropriate ones.

The ascendency of Charismatic-Pentecostal-in

fluenced worship around the world can be a major positive for the evangelical movement if reformation can reach those churches and if it is joined with the calling, training, and mentoring of leaders. If American churches come under more of the influence of the movement of the Holy Spirit in Africa and Asia, this will be a good thing.

Will the evangelicalizing of Catholic and Orthodox communions be a good development? One can hope for greater unity and appreciation, but the history of these developments seems to be much more about a renewed vigor to "evangelize" Protestantism in the name of unity.

Will the coming collapse get Evangelicals past the pragmatism and shallowness that has brought about the loss of substance and power? Probably not. The purveyors of the evangelical circus will be in fine form, selling their wares as the promised solution to every church's problems. I expect the landscape of megachurch vacuity to be around for a very long time.

Will it shake lose the prosperity Gospel from its parasitical place on the evangelical body of Christ? Evidence from similar periods is not encouraging. American Christians seldom seem to be able to separate their theology from an overall idea of personal affluence and success.

The loss of their political clout may impel many Evangelicals to reconsider the wisdom of trying to create a "godly society." That doesn't mean they'll focus solely on saving souls, but the increasing concern will be how to keep secularism out of church, not stop it altogether. The integrity of the church as a countercultural movement with a message of "empire subversion" will increasingly replace a message of cultural and political entitlement.

Despite all of these challenges, it is impossible not to be hopeful. As one commenter has already said, "Christianity loves a crumbling empire."

We can rejoice that in the ruins, new forms of Christian vitality and ministry will be born. I expect to see a vital and growing house church movement. This cannot help but be good for an evangelicalism that has made buildings, numbers, and paid staff its drugs for half a century.

We need new evangelicalism that learns from the past and listens more carefully to what God says about being His people in the midst of a powerful, idolatrous culture.

I'm not a prophet. My view of evangelicalism is not authoritative or infallible. I am certainly wrong in some of these predictions. But is there anyone who is observing evangelicalism in these times who does not sense that the future of our movement holds many dangers and much potential?

Michael Spencer is a writer and communicator living and working in a Christian community in Kentucky. He describes himself as "a postevangelical reformation Christian in search of a Jesus-shaped spirituality." This essay is adapted from a series on his blog, InternetMonk.com .

When Jesus spoke of the lilies of the field that are here today and gone tomorrow, he was referring to this flower, the anemone. It flowers throughout all the fields in late winter till summer and then gets burned up by the sun. There were lots blooming already in late February.

Reliv
[info]applehill
I've been pretty busy. i think my last post was on Christmas vacation. Here it is now winter break! I guess I update every big vacation from school.

I've been taking the Reliv shakes for over a month now. I felt great right away. All joint pain was gone. I ran out for a week and then got more but that week without was awful. I have to admit I'm pretty impressed. I'm the family skeptic but I'm sold on these products.

For my next order, I'll get the Reliv Now and see about the kids shakes as well.

Isaac has been on them and his face has really cleared up. His sniffles still persist. I'll try and see about that with someone. I wonder if it is clearing out his system.

I'm in Israel for a week so I'm closing Parisii for a week. Must hop over there and post it.
Must hurry along here and get dinner on the table as well.

Imperfect Christmas Cookies
[info]applehill
How I love imperfect Christmas cookies! You know the ones! They’re thick on one end and thin on the other. They’re the angels with the brown and white cow sprinkles or the purple maple leaves. After twenty years of child raising I think I’ve seen every imperfect cookie imaginable.

It all started out when I was a young lady, just a kid really. My mom and grandma were Christmas bakers extraordinaire! We seemed to have a new model every day of December; in fact our Norwegian heritage practically required it! The cookies were so good and looked so nice! I’d enjoy them while watching all those Christmas specials on tv and dream about my perfectly decorated house, with my color coordinated Christmas tree, my holiday ambient music and of course loads of Noel specialities, the king of which being the decorated Christmas cookie.

I got married to the man of my dreams and our first Christmas was spent together in the married couples dormitory at Bible school. Wanting enjoy every day of our vacation, I’d decided to make ahead my Christmas cookies in the dorm kitchen. I wasn’t much of a cook back then so my Christmas cookies were less than Better Homes and Gardens perfect. My man didn’t mind. He’s known as the family cookie monster now, but back then I was amazed at the relish with which he devoured those first cookies that I made. My perfectionism took a blow that day, when I showed him that first plate of Christmas goodies. It was so far from perfect. Little did I know the true importance of imperfect Christmas cookies.

A couple years later, I was sharing my Christmas baking skills with a blond cherub who looked like she was straight from a holiday card. I laugh when I remember that first baking day in our tiny suburban Paris apartment. It was a calm day compared to a few years later when my cherubs had multiplied and I was juggling three or four at once who wanted to roll, cut out and sprinkle all at once. Running from the dining room table to the oven, watching small hands, making sure the dough was being cut out and not eaten raw, I burned a few of those treats. No matter how imperfect those cookies were, that man of mine would sneak in and steal one while the kids were rolling and cutting (and arguing too from time to time). Everyone would stand back and appreciate their cookie craftsmanship with a glass of milk on those wonderful December afternoons. The floury faces and chubby hands would warm my heart. What was it about those oh so imperfect Christmas cookies that were so very delicious?

When the teens got to cookie making, the overall esthetic quality of the average Hill family Christmas cookie greatly improved. The kitchen was quite a mess after those baking sprees, but nothing that a whistle and a shout from mom couldn’t remedy. On those afternoons, we were lucky if we had a cameo appearance from the high school aged boys who’d throw on a handful of green and red sprinkles, swipe a cookie and run off to basketball or homework. Those magical cookies were just as good as last year... or were they better? One child loved those angels with bright red sprinkles. Another said the brown stars were the best. Dad would just smile and eat another one, basking in the bustle and holiday hum. I would just wonder, what was it about those Christmas cookies? Even when we’d give them as gifts or bring them to a Christmas party, they'd bring smiles to all faces.

This year, I’ve been too busy to do any yet. Lydia took over for me today and asked me for the recipe. I found our usual one and she started to make some with the two youngest. Today while listening absently to their cookie conversations, I realized what those magical ingredients were. No matter what the cookie looked like, or what decorations adorned it, the two most important ingredients remained the same.

Those ingredients are TIME and LOVE. It takes a little time to make those cookies. Actually you need to consecrate pretty much a whole afternoon to do it. That time consecration is important. Your priorities are the things that take the most of your time. This special time was set aside to make those Christmas treats. Time to mix and bake but also to talk. That cookie time is more than food prep. It says to the people you bake with and for that they are important enough to have that TIME spent on them and them only. The fact of spending that time on those cookies just for THEM equals LOVE. While baking, a lot of listening gets done. Undivided attention is given to family members during this holiday ritual. The bakers come away with that “good all over” feeling. They been listened to and communicated with. They’ve also sown into that baking time so the cycle of giving and receiving is complete. Love has been given and received. And that love reproduces itself later on when those imperfectly made cookies are given and eaten.
Those imperfect Christmas cookies may never make the front page of any culinary magazines, but when they are made and eaten, something wonderful happens every time.

Christmas approaches!
[info]applehill
I read in a friend's blog about their Christmas bazaar in her church. The pictures got me feeling all red and jolly and I wanted to ho ho ho.

As for me, I've listed a few gifts for the kids so far. I've thought about Thanksgiving menus.

As for the businesses, I have a few new things up on http://parisii.blog-city.com. Rizzo has come out with some cute new mini button earrings in pure Murano glass.

I'm not sure if I have it up yet on the site. If you want more info, please contact me. The price is 13€50 per pair.

The jewelry expos are really picking up in the Paris area. I'm very busy this holiday season and happy to be! So much so I've not had much time to take care of the Murano glass site.

Lydia is doing great with Au Naturel Glow. We are all enjoying the benefits of the all natural soaps. I haven't had too much time to consecrate to my ANG biz though.

I've been pretty busy with Royal Rangers. I spent the 8-11 of November at our Technical National Training. I had a lot of fun trudging through the woods at night with my RR patrol. I laughed most of the night with Carole once we got our tent up at 2 am (thanks to Fred!)

So that's what I've been up to recently!

« L’ESPRIT D’ENTREPRISE »

a day to write about....
[info]applehill

Some days are worth writing about. Today was one of them. I did an expo with Parisii murano glass jewelry and Lydia was doing Au Naturel Glow. A man walked in who looked like a cross of the mole guy from the Disney movie Atlantis and the little guy from the French movie the Visitors.

He rushed into the room saying, 'Where is the murano glass, where is the murano glass...' I showed him the table and he went on to tell me that Igor Stravinsky's tomb was on an island near Venice. (It is by the way.) I knew he wasn't "all together with it" then.

He went on to say how little money he had but wanted to buy something anyways. He finally chose something then wanted to pay by card. This whole time Lydia was a little scared. I was too. He was just too freaky. Finally I told him I took checks so he got his out. He asked if I wanted ID. I said yes. He really shocked us when he said,'I hope you don't mind if I take off my clothes in order to find my ID." Lydia was, well, looking scared. I told him not to undress completely. OK, I was looking for security at this point.

He handed me an ID which was his father's (!) and another card. At this point I didn't care if his check bounced, I wanted him out of here. He handed me his business card which described him as a consulate worker from some bogus country. I just thanked him and didn't insist for ID. Things were getting uncomfortable.

Then something happened that turned this scary situation around. He turned to Lydia, picked up a cotton swab she had for make up application, and stuck it in his ear, saying, "You don't mind if I use this do you? I mean, it's meant for this use now isn't it?" Lydia said, "Well I use them for make up application..." To which he answered, "Well yes, but I'm having trouble hearing. There, I've finished. I can hear better now. Do you have a waste basket?" And he held out the qtip. Lydia grabbed the basket for him to throw away the swab.

I was really ready for him to go now but I was nearly dying, trying not to laugh!!!

ParisiiParty almost ready
[info]applehill
I've enjoyed the warmer weather the last few days here in the Paris area. It's been rainy and humid but warmer.

Sunday I'll have my second open house for Parisii. I'm really looking forward to it! I haven't gotten many RSVP's yet but that means nothing. So many people just can drop in. I hope I have enough gifts.

Lydia & I are doing our first expo together: Parisii & Au Naturel Glow minerals. We'll be at the American Hospital in Paris on Friday!

Our birthday = gifts for you!
[info]applehill
We are celebrating our second anniversary with gifts for our customers at Parisii!

Just a touch of glass from Shelby at Parisii

my computer is slow but that's ok I have tea...
[info]applehill
I'm just sitting down to recap the back to school routine. Gabrielle is back to school since Wednesday. She's decided not to worry about things this year and take it cool. Good for her. She shot her wad in the States so she's starting this year out without much money. That is fine. God will provide.

Lydia has her year off and is a big help during the day before she leaves for work. She's doing lunch and we're doing housework and laundry half & half which I can say is a big help.

Isaac is in 11th grade with a major in science and math. Finally that boy is working like he should. This year won't be easy but he'll see how smart he really is.

John-Nathan,Martin and Zoé are enjoying the new year.

As for Au Naturel Glow, you seriously need to check out the new products like eye pencils and lipsticks. Any of the green tea products are more than worth their weight in gold. Love the stuff. My face has really cleared up. I'll be 45 tomorrow. I'm too old for zits and now I don't have to put up with them anymore thanks to ANG.

Parisii is just rolling along nicely. I didn't get to the salons I was hoping to attend but I found a lovely little internet boutique with REAL venetian pearls so look at the site every now and then and you'll see some new Shelby-made jewelry.

Just before vacation, I got an article published on Ren Klingeberg's Home Jewelry Success Tips site. The article is called Lunch Hour Jewelry sales and it tells how I've gotten my jewelry business off the ground. rena has a great site for those in jewelry. She is extremely helpful and really wants to see women succeed in their businesses. A lot of the tips I read there can be applied to any home businesses so do check it out.
